My debut as a book illustrator, dit., I created together with Tiny Fisscher. This book holds a very special meaning for me. Just before I received this first book commission, my world stood still for a moment: my brother chose to take his own life. Shortly afterwards I began the illustrations for this book, and processing this profound loss flowed naturally into every drawing.

The illustrations in dit. are entirely in black and white. That choice was no coincidence – it reflects the raw emotions and the deep grief that filled so much of my world at the time. Yet the book is more than a way of processing loss. It is an ode to life, to memories and to the love that remains, even after loss.

dit. eventually became a bestseller, for which I am enormously grateful. It moves me that this book has reached so many people and perhaps even offered a measure of comfort.
